Week 3 Notes, Homework, and videos
New Notes for Week 3:
- The exercises that you can use the e-collar on are sit, sit stay both still and circle(try to catch her before she moves), send to place, circle place, long place (to try to correct her before she leaves), recall (come command), and let's go.
- Remember the ecollar correction for sit is one tap (verbal "no" marker can be given beforehand). just like the metal manual collar gave. So after a "one mississippi" count of not performing, and then still spaced like that afterward.
- The correction for let's go and send to place is a 'tap tap tap" close together until her eyes meet yours and/or she comes towards you.
- You can use the long line both for safety if you are in an unfamiliar area AND for training wheels for yourself and to help her if she gets stuck, as you are getting used to using it.
- Remember if you are having trouble, it is okay to go back steps to get back on the right footing. For instance, decrease your distance and time to build back up OR perhaps lure a command again with food reward.
- Remember, as you increase distractions, you most probably need to decrease distance and/or length of time again.
- Remember how sit can be used to make jumping NOT the habit. I am also going to include an exercise I do with dogs to have them be calmer next to (at first known individuals) and then strangers. This is optional, but might help later. I also use let's go or come to call her away from people.
Homework Schedule:
Calming Exercises:
- Long Place 30 minutes Goal: To work on having your dog be able to stay on the place with the leash dropped while you sit for 30 minutes. (If they leave the place, this is fine. You don't need to start over, but just keep track of the amount of times and maybe what situations made your dog leave their place).Week 3 Change: You can practice this outside now with the ecollar (but always keep safety in mind).
Obedience Exercises:
Also remember you can group these exercises together for a session.
- Heeling in the more traditional way (I did not continue the luring with her, because of her tummy upset and she really does not need treats to work well). 10 minutes Goal is to get 3 sets of 4 auto sits AND to have three good steps in heel before stopping for auto sit (no goal for in a row for the actual moving heel other than to be sure to get 3-5 good positioned steps before auto sit). Week 3: I would still practice this on the leash and metal training collar. There are dirctions on the heeling exercise sheet for when you would correct on the ecollar.
- Send to Place (using let's go to have her follow in between) 5 minutes plus Goal: Is still to get three sessions of four in a row. Week 3 Change: You can now practice this on ecollar and off leash AND outside (keeping safety in mind)
- Circle Sit Stays 5 plus minutes Goal: Is to get four in a row circle stays for 1 minute. Practice your collar sit correction if she gets up. Remember the sit correction is just the loose tight loose motion of the chain collar. It does not need to be harsh just a quick zip zing movement. If done correctly it will not move your dog towards you or move her at all. Week 3 Change: You can practice this on ecollar AND outside (keeping safety in mind), I missed getting this on video with Lucy, so I have Carl in the video.
- Circle Place 5 Plus minutes Goal: Is to be able to get four in a row of these for one minute. Week 3 Change: This can be practiced outside and online ecollar (keeping safety in mind at all times). Also, somehow did not get this on video. So this is Birdie demoing.
- Recall or Come Command WITH Still Sit Stay 5plus minutes Goal: To get three sets of four in a row come command and sit stays. Week 3 Change: You can practice this outside and/or on ecollar (always keeping safety in mind).
- Let's Go 10 plus minutes Goal: To get 3 sets of four in a row (without needing a correction or reward). Also, you can use it more casually in yard to give her some space to sniff ect (like maybe five minutes or more) and then call her to make sure she understands it in a casual not training way. I use this to prepare them for hikes with the family later.
